SIBU: Bintulu division secretary Abdul Jalil Bujang (pic) has been picked by the party as its candidate for the Balingian by-election.
Abdul Jalil was one of two names the party had shortlisted; the other being its Mukah branch chairman Kassim Mahsin.
PKR deputy president Azmin Ali, in announcing this at a press conference on Sunday, said they had confidence that Abdul Jalil, 55, being a local of Kampung Lintang, Balingian would be able to give BN a tough fight.
"The voters in Balingian are now more matured in knowing who can look after their interest. I believe Abdul Jalil, with his wide experience in politics, will be able to do that," he added.
Abdul Jalil, a Melanau-Muslim, resides in Bintulu. He is married with 12 children (two have passed on).
Abdul Jalil contested in the 2011 state election for the Jepak seat where he garnered the second highest number of votes in a five-cornered fight.
He polled 2,342 votes against the winner, Talip Zulpilip (BN), who had 5,470 votes.
Azmin said PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was expected to be in Mukah on March 25 to lend his support to their candidate.
The Balingian by-election was called following the resignation of Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, the incumbent and former Sarawak chief minister on Feb 28.
